Amity Printing

China's Nanjing Amity Printing Co. ("Amity Printing") is an under-tapped source of Bibles for the underground Christians in China.

Amity Printing is the world's largest Bible printer and 75% of the 12 million Bibles Amity prints annually is sold inside China. Due to Amity's massive scale economies, Amity Bibles retail for as low as $1.20, and China's underground church Christians bear no risk for owning, storing or transporting Amity-printed Bibles.

But Amity supplies Bibles only to the government-approved Three Self Patriotic Movement and cannot fill bulk orders from non-Three Self churches. Amity is also forbidden from printing Bibles for children, and even Amity's regular Bibles for adults can only be sold at Three Self churches.

However, those Bibles are still within reach of China's underground Christians. In fact, as long as Amity continues to sell its Bibles at cost and buying them at the Three Self churches requires neither registration nor presentation of identification, the most cost-effective way to supply Bibles to China's house church Christians is to buy and distribute Amity Bibles or to fund and encourage those Christians to go and buy the Amity Bibles on their own.

Wouldn’t that reduce the supply of Amity Bibles in China?

Amity's current printing volume isn’t a random number but one set by the demand for its Bibles. As long as Amity continues to increase its output in response to demand, soaking up its Bibles will only push Amity to increase its capacity and output that much faster.

Does this mean that Bible smuggling should stop? Hardly.
